An Angel Seated on a Carpet, by Bukhara Shaybanid dynasty about 1550 AD “The scrolling decoration in the background of this painting is characteristic of the schools of Bukhara and Khurasan. The figure, however, derives from a well-known Persian portrait of a seated woman, here transformed into an angel by the addition of wings. This lovely winged angel sits on a 16th century Persian carpet and holds a golden flask and cup in each hand. The long sashes flowing from Buddhist depictions of celestial beings. In the Islamic tradition, angels are believed to be made from pure light and personify the force of goodness. Artists in the Islamic world borrowed artistic conventions from Sasanian, Christian and Buddhist traditions to depict beautiful angels with large wings dressed in the jewelry and fashions of the day. The two couplets of Persian poetry framing the angel emphasize her beauty through a connection to China, which was held in the highest regard in Persian literature and culture.
